Pilgrim’s Pride contract growers Sonny and Mike Taylor of Cottage Hill Farm in Petersburg, W.Va., received the U.S. Poultry and Egg Association’s Family Farm Environmental Excellence Award for the Mid-Atlantic Region. This award, which recognizes exemplary environmental stewardship, was presented to five family farms at the 2007 International Poultry Expo in Atlanta. The Taylor family is very protective of their 1,200-acre farm, which includes cattle, crops and forage, in addition to poultry production. Since the early ‘90s, they have utilized phosphorus-based nutrient application rates and had one of the earliest litter storage buildings in the area.

The family also actively works to promote environmental education and conservation causes. Their farm, which has been in the family for four generations, serves as a pilot for several West Virginia University research projects and a University of Maryland class makes annual visits to study geology on the farm.

Two other Pilgrim’s Pride contract growers were recognized as runners-up for their regional Farm Family Environmental Excellence Awards. They are John and Doug Carter from the Live Oak, Fla., complex and the Huneycutt brothers from the Marshville, N.C., complex.

Pilgrim’s Pride Environmental Awards

Pilgrim's Pride growers are committed to being good stewards of the land and water. To honor this commitment, each year we recognize several poultry growers for their earth-friendly environmental practices.

Recently, several family farms in Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia were honored for environmental commitment. Five farms in each state received the Environmental Stewardship Award for outstanding commitment to environmental practices, and one farm in each state received the top Environmental Excellence Award for superior commitment to environmental practices.

Pilgrim’s Pride service technicians nominated farms based on criteria that included the physical appearance of the farm as well as the grower’s environmentally friendly operational methods, organizational practices, chemical usage control, erosion and emission control, voluntary environmental efforts, and community environmental service. Judges included county extension agents, soil conservationists, and environmental specialists.

We appreciate all of our growers for their commitment to sound environmental practices, and we celebrate these winners for their outstanding environmental stewardship.
